Comic Review: A Slow Week

Weekly Comic Review time! Not a big stack of comics this week. I'll do this in the order I read them:

Avengers vs X-Men: Round 3:

This issue starts with Wolverine recovering from being burned alive by Hope, who used her Phoenix powers on him. Its funny how things like this (horrible burns no one else would survive) only happen to Wolverine. Spiderman was right next to him and he was unscathed. Maybe Hope knew Logan could survive with his healing factor so she only attacked him. (Also, he was about to gut her like a fish, but that doesn't help my point) My point is, things only Wolvie can survive convienently only happen to Wolvie. I wonder if the other X-men take advantage of his healing powers for practical jokes: "Ha, ha, Logan! We replaced your beer with battery acid! It's okay, you'll heal." or "Hey, lets cut off Logan's fingertips while he sleeps and watch them grow back!" Going along with that, for someone whose pirmary weapon is having lethal knives coming out of his knuckles, he doesn't do that much stabbing. Case in point, the face off between him and Captain America. In issue three, Hope is on the run and the Avengrs and X-Men each want to find her first. The high point of the issue is when Cap questions Wolvie's loyalty, tells him to sit this one out and Logan says make me. The two have a throw down inside the Quinjet. Wolverine instantly stabs Captain America in the chest and watches him bleed to death. Just kidding. Thats what we'd think would happen if it was just a cage match.  But Cap chooses his environment carefully, plus he uses his ability to phone in a friend. Overall, its a fun fight. For some reason watching heroes fight each other is more fun than them fighting villians. The fight was cool, but the issue was mostly build up for the next battle. I rate it with 7 exclamation points: !!!!!!!

Invincible Iron Man #526: Kicking off  the Long Way Down story, the issue is mostly set up for future issues, but Larroca's art has visibly improved. He does a good job with the mecha and giving every character a different look and not just the same face wth different hair. 6 points !!!!!!

X-O Manowar #1: I had no idea this was coming. Valiant Comics is back and they've rebooted XO Manowar. Its a story about a barbarian who stumbles into an advanced alien armored suit. Its like Conan meets Iron Man. With great art by Cary Nord, I'm hoping this comic will last. 8 exclamation points !!!!!!!!

Ultimate Spider-man #10: Spidey faces the Prowler. Its mostly them talking and setting up for him facing the Scorpion. Looking forward to that. I really liked the art by David Marquez, but it was another filler issue setting up other issues. 6 points!!!!!!

Pulling a Lucas

Hey. I decided to recolor page 14 (the first page of chapter three). I never liked how it looked. The improvement isn't obvious until you see them side by side. New version first, old version below it. In fact I plan to get all George Lucas and touch up a lot of the older pages I'm not satisfied with. This won't affect my progress on the next chapter. My deadline for chapter four was always May 28th. Don't look that up.

Robot God Akamatsu Sketching

Work on my Robot god Akamatsu picture continues. Here's the latest draft I drew using a drafting pencil with dense lead so that the lines are light. Once I'm happy with the layout, I'll go back over it with a softer, darker pencil lead.

Reviews!

Here's where I review the comics that came out this week- not all of them, just the ones I felt like buying.

First up, the latest installment to the Avengers vs X-Men story: Versus #1 and Uncanny X-Men #9.  These issues basically zoom in on the battles we saw in AvX#2 so we can see all the details. This is actually a brilliant concept. Who cares about the story? What we're really here for is to get to see the Avengers and X-men kick the crap out of each other.  These issues focus on Iron Man vs Magneto, Thing vs Namor and Red Hulk vs Colossus. I was curious about Iron Man vs Magneto since AvX#2 put out that it wouldn't go down the way you think. Turns out IM's armor isn't made of stuff that Maggie can rip apart. Otherwise it would be a very short fight, and be less entertaining. It is a close match. At one point Mags makes himself his own armored suit. I do have a bone to pick with one thing: at one point Iron Man uses his satellites/space craft to harness the magnetic field of Jupiter. It would take at least 45 min for that energy to reach earth. During that time Magneto could have had his way with Tony 5 times over. Plus, why go through all that effort and expense to bring more magnetic energy in a fight with the Master of Magnetism. But the artwork is great. Especially Stuart Immonen's art. I plan do a blog on my favorite comic artists. He's on the list. See the above page he drew from the battle between the Thing (one of Marvel's most lovable characters) and Namor (one of Marvel's biggest toolbags). I mean, seriously, whats the deal with Namor. He has wings on his feet, pointy ears, lives in the water, and has a fetish for other super heroes girlfriends, especially the blondes. (I guess I can't blame him- Susan Storm and Emma Frost are babes) Who would want this guy on their team? Hey, lets hire the guy who tries to steal our women and sees himself as the King of the Sea. Anyway, no surprises with who wins each match, but still a lot of fun and great art. I rate it with 7 exclamation points!!!!!!!

Quickie Reviews:

Ultimates #9: This story is so huge and epic I can't help but be excited with each issue. I can't wait to see the  bad guy in this one get his butt kicked. Sadly, it still hasn't happened yet in this issue. This has dragged out since issue one. I'm ready for Cap America to show up and punch out the villlian and get it over with. Also 7 exclamation points: !!!!!!!

Rocketeer Adventures #2: A series of short stories by a variety of artists. I think the Rocketeer is a totally underrated and underappreciated charater. So is that cool movie about him from the 90's. He hasn't reached his full potential, and I'm not sure this comic does either. It does touch on what makes him great: 1940's action, and a guy in a jet pack. 6 points: !!!!!!

Danger Girl: Revolver #4: This is one of those comics I pick up for the artwork alone. I really like Chris Madden's loose energetic style. It was even better in his Jack Avarice series. He draws some great action scenes. A car chase is hard to make exciting in a comic book, but he pulls it off. However, there are only so many ways you can mimic Indiana Jones and James Bond before it gets a little tired. 5 points: !!!!!

Art Swap!

I'm pretty excited about this. Frankie Washington is the artist behind Robot God Akamatsu, a comic about a 1970's anime inspired robot that defends Boston against giant monsters. Cool stuff:  http://robotgodakamatsu.blogspot.com/

We've agreed to do an art swap: he gets to play with my DRC characters, I get to play with his. It will be fun, and a good way to promote each other. I think I'm getting the better end of the deal. He's got a bigger audience.

First I went through different ideas for what I wanted to do in my picture. I really liked his design for the robo-monster Dai-Kaiju-Leviatron. Its a cool looking cyborg creature. I also liked the launching fist I saw Akamatsu use in the comic. I settled pretty quickly on the pic using that. Below is the rough scribble of the composition I plan to use. Next step is the full scale pencil drawing.

Comic Book Day!
Topic: Books

This week I hit the jackpot with the new comics! A lot of quality comics hit the shelves, so I thought I'd review some of my weekly loot:

Avengers vs X-Men #1,2, New Avengers #24, Avengers#25, Wolverine and the X-Men#9: All these comics tie in together to describe the opening salvo of the war between the Avengers and the X-Men. While it got off to a medicore start with issue 1, things kicked into high gear with issue 2. Once all the set up is over with, they jump right into the action. Cyclops and Captain America face off over the Mutant Girl, Hope. Cyclops believes the Phoenix Force could join with her and restart the mutant species. Cap thinks it would be more like the end of everything as we know it. This debate quickly breaks down into punching and blasting because its more entertaining than talking, and because Cyclops was being kind of a D-Bag. (Seriously, I think thats an ongoing subplot: Cyclops evolving into an even bigger dork) There a great moment when the Avengers all leap out of the back of the Helicarrier as its floating over the X-men's island, and the face punching commences. One of my favorite scenes is what the narrator describes as "the most expensive punch in history": Emma Frost turns her skin into diamond and  pounds into Iron Man's multi billion dollar armor. Some say that these Mega-cross over events are just gimmicks to require readers to pick up every issue of every series just to know what's going on. I say Marvel is doing it right. You can follow the story with the main series (AvX) without reading anything else, but the other series will give you different perspectives of the same event, kinda like all the issues you pick up that week are happening at the same time. Its all well planned out. What's really impressive is how it feels like other cross over comic events lead into each other. For example, The Dark Phoenix Saga from the 80's, and the Avengers Disassembled story which lead to the House of M story, which lead to the Messiah Complex story, all contributed to the AvX story. (Scarlett Witch causing mutants to be an endangered species, and Hope being the first new mutant lead Cyclops to act the way he does) I'm sure the final outcome will set up more stories down the line. Overall, very epic. Can't wait for the next issue in two weeks. I rate it with 8 exclamation points: !!!!!!!!

A few quickie reviews:

The Invincible Iron Man #515:

I was excited reading this one. Its the turning point. After issue after issue of Tony Stark getting his butt handed to him by life (and Mandarin behind the scenes) he's anout to turn the tables on the bad guys. At the end Rhodey asks him how they fight back. He tells Rhodey: "We don't. Checkmate means we lost. They won that game. Now they're playing ours." At that point I shouted out loud, "YES!!" Its okay no one heard me. Writer Matt Fraction does a good Iron Man. He's like the Batman of the Marvel universe: he always has a backup plan. I give it 7 exclamation points: !!!!!!!

The Walking Dead #96

I don't want to be one of those pretentious geeks who always say "The comic book is way better than the tv show" But it is true. I love reading each issue. I burn through them in a matter of minutes and can't wait to read the next one, even if like in this case, not much actually happened. The conclusion of the "A larger World" storyline is just a set up for the next storyline. It is a good set up though. Looks like Rick and his posse will be facing off against a bunch of cutthroats soon. 6 exclamation points: !!!!!!

Invincible #90

This is usually a great comic. The last few were pretty exciting. This one was okay. Dinosaurus is kind of interesting. He a crazy dinosaur guy who is more of an intellectual threat than a physical one. I like the idea of replacing the main character with a minority character, but his behavior seemed a little stereotypical (was he hitting on Invincible's girlfriend?) Plus you know, unlike Ultimate SpiderMan,  this is only temporary. Eventually the original Invincible will be back. 5 exclamation points: !!!!!

Ultimate Spider Man #9

In Ultimate Marvel, Peter Parker died. Miles Morales is the new Spider Man. While he is the opposite of Peter in background and appearance, they're the same at heart. I like how his Power/Responsibility origin tied into Peter's death. I resented how much the origin story was dragged out over several issues, but you can really relate to him and cheer for him when he wins. He's even more of a rookie than Peter ever was, so you really feel like he might not make it out of each situation he gets in. By the end of this issue I was getting worried about poor Miles. 7 points: !!!!!!!

 Uncanny X-Men 10:

This came out last week so its a lead up for AvX. Captain America is even in this one and he notes that saving the world isn't Cyclop's number one priority. Like I said, Cyclops is turning into a D-bag. What was cool though, was the introduction of a VERY interesting villian. Unit. He's basically a leftover robot weapon from an ancient alien race that almost ruled the universe at one point. He was scary, threatening, and with no effort made asses out of all the x-men. At the end of the day he simply let them capture him as part of some evil  plan...7 points: !!!!!!!

Whew! That was a lot more typing than my delicate fingers are used to, and I still have yet to read: Amazing Spider Man, Wonder Woman, G I Joe, and Fantastic Four. Like I said: jackpot!

UPDATE: I just read Fantastic Four #605:

Normally I wouldn't bother adding in another entry like this. I though Hickman's run on FF was great, but a little overrated. So, FF was towards the bottom of my reading list. But this issue was something special. This is one of those issues that come along every now and then that could be looked at as a work of art separate from the ongoing story. Now that they changed the future, Reed Richards and his time traveling dad jump ahead to see what the future holds in 1000 year increments. What they see is surprising and touching. You will love Ben Grimm (Thing) if you didn't already (I already did- he is so underappreciated. Like Wolverine, what makes him great is that you eventually realize there's a lot of heart under that tough guy surface) Everyone should pick this issue up even if you never read a Fantastic Four comic before. In fact I might pick up a few extra copies to hand out to people. 10 exclamation points !!!!!!!!!!

Many Jenny

Sometimes an artist has approach the subject matter from different angles to make sure the idea is being conveyed in the best way possible. In this case, its the idea of a cheerleader riding on top of a T Rex. I gave this several attempts to make sure I got this right. Didn't want to mess this one up. For DRC I want to focus on the action, and certain moments within the non stop action sequence that is the story. So heres several different looks at Jenny on a T Rex. I went with the first two.

No Splotchies!

Here's a couple of pics from the next chapter I already posted on Facebook. This shows my new approach to coloring. The new technique is more time consuming but it looks cleaner. Gone are the days of the splotchy colors from the last chapter. Let us never speak of those splotchy days again.
